In Town Portsmouth Bicycle Route Following closely on the heels of the grant award to construct the Rockingham Bicycle/Pedestrian Bridge linking Portsmouth with Pease International Tradeport and the Greater Seacoast Area, The City of Portsmouth received an award to create a safe bicycle route from the Rockingham Bicycle/Pedestrian bridge to downtown Portsmouth. This route became known as the Portsmouth Intown Bike Loop. This past spring, the City of Portsmouth working with an engineering firm specializing in bicycle transportation design, SABR, and the public, completed a plan for developing this route. Much thought and consideration went into the choice of the best route, taking into consideration: safety, convenience, scenic and historical interest, and traffic volumes. The City should be commended for their patient, thorough, and thoughtful approach to this design. The agreed upon route takes riders over the bridge and makes a left onto Woodbury Avenue. A right onto Edmond Avenue will bring riders to Maplewood Avenue on which they take a right and continue into town. A left onto Hanover Street will bring the cyclist to the High Hanover Parking garage. This route can be constructed to meet bike safety standards at all points with the exception of the Maplewood Ave. bridge. The bridge is scheduled for reconstruction in 2006, and now with the added needs of this bicycle route, the city will be asking the state to move up the schedule for reconstruction. Until this time, the grant monies awarded for the project will be encumbered, to be used for road improvements and signs at the time of bridge reconstruction. In the mean time, maps will be erected at the Rockingham bridge and the parking garage downtown identifying possible bike routes into and out of town. The maps will be installed this fall, so we have a start, and as with all of these important transportation improvement projects a few more short years to wait for a high quality Bicycle Transportation Network. Construction of the Portsmouth Link is scheduled to begin in 2006, as the route depends on the rehabilitation of the Maplewood Bridge over Route 1 Bypass.
