Bicycle bridge hoisted near Portsmouth traffic circle

PORTSMOUTH - A vital connection for the entire Seacoast region was erected early this morning.

About midnight, the Rockingham Bicycle/Pedestrian bridge was hoisted and set into place across the Spaulding Turnpike just north of the Portsmouth Traffic Circle and running parallel to Interstate 95.

The bridge, which can be accessed off Rockingham Avenue and connects to Pease International Tradeport, will become the cornerstone in a network of bicycle routes in the Seacoast.

For the past four years, the Seacoast Area Bicycle Routes or SABR - a local nonprofit organization has been working with municipal and regional planners to develop and secure funding for the Seacoast-Great Bay Bicycle Transportation Network connecting the Seacoast of New Hampshire and southern Maine with Pease International Tradeport and Great Bay along with the communities of Durham, Dover, Newington, Newmarket and Exeter.

Future routes could stretch to more communities.

The central location and wide open roads of Pease, combined with its expanding role as a center of employment, made it a natural choice as the central hub in the development of the network, SABR members said.
