SABR contributes to Portsmouth Bike Path

By CHARLES LARDNER
Portsmouth Bureau Chief

PORTSMOUTH - Cameron Wake of the Seacoast Area Bicycle Routes organization presented Mayor Evelyn Sirrell with a check for $7,000. That was in addition to the previous $1,000 his organization contributed to the creation of a bike path from the downtown area to the bicycle/pedestrian bridge over the Spaulding Turnpike. The money was provided to SABR via a grant from the Bikes Belong Coalition of Massachussets.

The donations by SABR match the funds put up by the city to equal 20 percent of the cost of the bike route. The other 80 percent, about $68,000, is federal grant money obtained through the Intermodal Surface and Transportation Act.

Such a path would make a more complete system and encourage bicycle usage in an area facing traffic and parking concerns, Karen Jacoby, the city's community development project manager, said. Jacoby also said that Portsmouth has utilized incentives from the transportation act as well. Federal money from the ISTEA was used in the building of the $850,000 bridge, which was completed in 1999, and those funds are currently being tapped to build 18 bike racks in 10 locations throughout the city.
